- How To Use / What It Is Used For
- Shrimp can be grounded and used as season, cooked as a side dish, or used to even make cocktails. Before using shrimp to cook, clean it properly.
- To cook shrimp, follow the steps below:
- Check for freshness
- When you cook shrimp, it should be firm, pinkish-white, and should not have a strong fishy odour.
- Raw shrimp bought from the market should be firm, translucent, and shiny, and have no odour.
- To use cooked or raw frozen shrimp, it should first be defrosted in the refrigerator overnight, before you can clean or devein them. You can also defrost it in cold water.
- Frozen shrimp should be kept refrigerated between 32 and 38 F. It usually lasts up to 5 or 6 months.
- Raw shrimp should be consumed within 48 hours of purchase.
- Cooked shrimp should be eaten within 5-7 days.
- Rinse Shrimps
- Thoroughly rinse shrimps with cold water and inspect for signs of spoilage.
- Frozen shrimp should only be rinsed and defrosted in cold water. Rinsing shrimp in hot water can make it gummy or rubbery because they cook easily.
- Remove the shrimps’ heads, by pinching and twisting the head, until it comes free. Or you can leave it if you wish.
- Remove shrimp legs, by turning the body "belly" up, and grasping the legs firmly in your fingertips, tearing them down toward the tail and pulling them free.
- To remove raw shrimp shell, start where you removed the legs, peel the shell back along the sides of the shrimp, like you were opening the jacket. Use your fingernail, or a small paring knife to get the carapace started, pull it back and off the shrimp in segments.
- Devein the shrimp, using a deveining knife or a paring knife. Cut into the shrimp, straight along this ridge, just deep enough to reach the vein to pull it out. Grab the vein with your fingers and pull it back toward the tail of the shrimp. It should come off easily.
- Shrimp Storage
- To store raw shrimp, rinse it in cold water to remove any loose shell bits or gunk from the insides of the shrimp. Cook them after cleaning or store them in a refrigerator.
- To refrigerate shrimp, store in the fridge, between 32 and 38 degrees F, in cling wrap or an airtight container.
